Newport News man received kilos of cocaine via UPS found guilty, awaiting sentencing

A Newport News man is facing 5 to 40 years in prison after a federal jury found him guilty in a case where he received 2 kilos of cocaine via UPS. Last August, 33-year-old James Arthur Scott sat in a rental car in a parking lot in Hampton and waited for over an hour and a half for a UPS package from California, court documents and evidence from his trial revealed. That parcel, which was addressed to “Lit Wick” contained several layers of packaging and had two shoeboxes filled with wax. Inside the wax, there was a kilo of cocaine in each box. Law enforcement agents had intercepted the parcel at the UPS facility in Newport News and organized a controlled delivery. Lane closure scheduled on Coleman Bridge Sunday

This weekend, VDOT contractors are scheduled to work on the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge, which carries Rt. 17 between Gloucester and York counties. Drivers may want to factor in additional travel time on Sunday, Jan. 28. There will be a single-lane closure scheduled on from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weather permitting. Marine traffic that requires bridge openings will also be impacted. Between 8 a.m. and as late as 8 p.m., all bridge openings will be restricted. Work and successful testing will need to be completed before the reopenings resume, noted VDOT. Vessels that don’t require a bridge open can continue using the channel as usual. VA General Assembly update: HB 721, an anti-rent gouging bill, moves forward

HB 721 “aims to protect Virginians against rent gouging practices,” said Delegate Nadarius Clark, who introduced the bill. If passed, HB 721 will give localities the ability to adopt anti-rent gouging provisions and an anti-rent gouging board. Notice would have to be provided and a public hearing held before a locality adopted its measures. The bill also requires landlords to provide at least two months written notice of a rent increase. Additionally, a rent increase couldn’t exceed the locality calculated allowance. And the allowance would be set at equal to the annual increase in the Consumer Price Index or 7%, whichever is less. Woman wanted for fatal Norfolk crash now in custody

Dominique Goodwin, the Chesapeake woman wanted for the fatal wrong-way tunnel crash in Norfolk, turned herself in Monday morning, VSP reported. Goodwin was wanted for aggravated involuntary manslaughter after an incident in the early hours of December 30. According to VSP, she was driving her Volkswagen eastbound in the westbound lanes of the Downtown Tunnel when she crashed head-on with a Chevy Equinox driven by Shelby Riddick Walker of Portsmouth. Riddick, 43, was killed instantly, authorities say. Virginia State Police had been looking for Goodwin for weeks to no avail. They had even issued a public appeal for information on her whereabouts. Woman unidentifiable after Isle of Wight crash

The extent of the injuries in an Isle of Wight crash Tuesday night left Virginia State Police unable to positively identify the driver, VSP announced. It was just after 11 p.m. when VSP was informed that there was a single vehicle on Brewers Neck Boulevard north of Newton Haven Lane in Carrolton. Based on its preliminary investigations, VSP said it was determined that the woman, who authorities are currently calling Jane Doe, was traveling northbound on Brewers Neck Boulevard, when she lost control of the vehicle. She ran off the road, struck a ditch, and when the 2004 Ford Taurus hit the ditch, it flipped over several times, said VSP. Wanted man jumps off James River Bridge, survives

A 29 year-old Suffolk man who was wanted for felony probation violation jumped off the James River Bridge this morning, January 22, in an attempt to avoid arrest but was later caught, Virginia State Police reported. Kelly Golden, Jr. was driving a 2021 Hyundai sedan headed northbound on the James River Bridge, when at around 8:45 a.m., he caught the attention of a DMV special agent who reportedly saw him driving recklessly, VSP noted. That agent attempted to stop Golden, but he allegedly refused. However, traffic had come to a halt because the bridge was opening. According to VSP, “in an attempt to flee the agent,” Golden sideswiped a 2022 Toyota Rav4 and ran into the back of a 2018 Dodge Charger and a 2019 Ford Fusion. Virginia State Police asking for tips on wanted Chesapeake woman

Virginia State Police is asking for the public’s help to locate a 27-year-old Chesapeake woman wanted for allegedly causing a fatal crash. On December 30, in the early hours, Dominique Chi'qura Goodwin was driving a 2018 Volkswagen heading eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-64 in Norfolk and crashed head-on into a 2006 Chevrolet Equinox, according to VSP. The Equinox was driven Shelby Riddick Walker of Portsmouth who was killed instantly, authorities say. Goodwin is facing an aggravated involuntary manslaughter charge. VSP said it has seen been trying to find Goodwin to arrest her, but those efforts have not been successful. Preliminary lane closures and traffic stoppages on the Route 17 James River Bridge were scheduled to start today, January 6, to prepare for a 4-day full closure of the bridge. January full shutdown VDOT announced that a critical maintenance project is needed that will replace 40 of the 80 counterweight wire ropes that lift the bridge for marine traffic. That work will require full closure of the bridge from Friday, January 12, at 1 a.m. through Tuesday, January 16, at 5 a.m. Ahead of the shutdown, there will be a single-lane in both directions that's slated to start as early as 7 p.m. on January 11. 7 Vehicle Crash Closes MMBT Southboun in Newport News

It was a 7-vehicle crashed that closed the southbound side of the Monitor Merrimac Bridge Tunnel in Newport News on Monday, Virginia State Police revealed. The accident occurred at about 6:40 a.m. And based on VSP’s preliminary investigations, it appears a Ford Focus hit the back of Chevy Malibu, which, in turn, sideswiped a tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer then rear-ended a Hyundai Sonata, causing it to hit a Ford Escape, which was pushed into a Buick. One person was transported for treatment with non life-threatening injuries, and the unnamed driver of the Focus and tractor-trailer have been charged with following too closely, VSP reported. The 3-year-old who was taken from Staten Island and believed to possibly be in the Virginia has been found, but the person accused of kidnapping her has not.   On Monday, Virginia State Police issued an alert on behalf of the New York City Police Department advising that Kadence France was missing, was possibly in Virginia, and there was a credible threat of health and safety. The child was last seen on Saturday, December 16, with 26-year-old Randalae Rhodes, the alert added. After two days missing, NYPD confirmed that France was returned to a police precinct in the city by a family member Monday.
