Investigation underway for fatal single-vehicle crash in York County

Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal, single-vehicle crash in York County that occurred on Friday afternoon. At around 4:30 p.m. VSP troopers responded to the 3000 block of Goodwin Neck Road, which is north of Back Creek Park. Based on preliminary investigations, VSP determined that 30-year-old Aaron Eli Hoopingarner of Yorktown. was traveling northbound on Goodwin Neck Road. He got into the southbound lanes to attempt to pass two vehicles but he ran off the road and hit a traffic sign. After hitting the sign, VSP said it appears the man tried to regain control but he overcorrected. He ran off the road again, hit a tree, and was killed upon impact. Suspect in Brooklyn crimes killed in Virginia Beach police chase

The man killed last week in a Virginia Beach crash during a police chase was from New York. He was driving a stolen vehicle and was listed as a suspect in a violent crime that occurred the day he died, VSP announced. The police chase began last Friday, February 23, just shy of 8:30 p.m. State Police attempted to stop a 2024 black Chevrolet pickup truck for reckless driving because the vehicle was reportedly going 92 mph in a 55 mph zone. The truck was heading south on Rt. 13 in Exmore, a town on the Eastern Shore, and refused to stop, VSP stated. VSP asking for tips after man shot on I-664 in Hampton

A 51-year-old man was shot while driving on I-664 in Hampton on February 20, and Virginia State Police is seeking witnesses. Based of the details that have emerged from the preliminary investigation, VSP said the victim was driving a black 2019 Toyota Yaris heading northbound in the far left lane. He was "a few car lengths" behind a school bus. VSP did not disclose which school’s bus it was. The victim reportedly told VSP that a black sedan attempted to merge into his lane to bypass the bus but wasn’t successful. That sedan went around the bus, pulled up beside his Yaris, and he heard a loud pop. VSP said when the man realized he had been shot, he pulled over and called 911. Portsmouth Police Department reported that one of its new cameras caught a drug deal, and one of the people in that deal was wanted in four cities plus wanted by the Department of Corrections. Detectives in the Special Investigations Unit reportedly saw 35-year-old Keeshawn Faltz “delivering narcotics to a street level drug dealer,” who wasn’t identified. A Newport News man is facing 5 to 40 years in prison after a federal jury found him guilty in a case where he received 2 kilos of cocaine via UPS. Last August, 33-year-old James Arthur Scott sat in a rental car in a parking lot in Hampton and waited for over an hour and a half for a UPS package from California, court documents and evidence from his trial revealed. That parcel, which was addressed to “Lit Wick” contained several layers of packaging and had two shoeboxes filled with wax. Inside the wax, there was a kilo of cocaine in each box. Law enforcement agents had intercepted the parcel at the UPS facility in Newport News and organized a controlled delivery. Lane closure scheduled on Coleman Bridge Sunday

This weekend, VDOT contractors are scheduled to work on the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge, which carries Rt. 17 between Gloucester and York counties. Drivers may want to factor in additional travel time on Sunday, Jan. 28. There will be a single-lane closure scheduled on from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weather permitting. Marine traffic that requires bridge openings will also be impacted. Between 8 a.m. and as late as 8 p.m., all bridge openings will be restricted. Work and successful testing will need to be completed before the reopenings resume, noted VDOT. Vessels that don’t require a bridge open can continue using the channel as usual. HB 721 “aims to protect Virginians against rent gouging practices,” said Delegate Nadarius Clark, who introduced the bill. If passed, HB 721 will give localities the ability to adopt anti-rent gouging provisions and an anti-rent gouging board. Notice would have to be provided and a public hearing held before a locality adopted its measures. The bill also requires landlords to provide at least two months written notice of a rent increase. Additionally, a rent increase couldn’t exceed the locality calculated allowance. And the allowance would be set at equal to the annual increase in the Consumer Price Index or 7%, whichever is less. Woman wanted for fatal Norfolk crash now in custody

Dominique Goodwin, the Chesapeake woman wanted for the fatal wrong-way tunnel crash in Norfolk, turned herself in Monday morning, VSP reported. Goodwin was wanted for aggravated involuntary manslaughter after an incident in the early hours of December 30. According to VSP, she was driving her Volkswagen eastbound in the westbound lanes of the Downtown Tunnel when she crashed head-on with a Chevy Equinox driven by Shelby Riddick Walker of Portsmouth. Riddick, 43, was killed instantly, authorities say. Virginia State Police had been looking for Goodwin for weeks to no avail. They had even issued a public appeal for information on her whereabouts.
