VSP investigating fatal crash in Northumberland

Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal crash that occurred in Northumberland on Christmas Eve. Details remain limited but VSP said it responded to the incident at about 2 a.m. In Burgess, there as a single-car crash involving a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt less than one-third of a mile from the intersection of Rt. 360 and Rt. 200. The car ran off the right side of the road, the westbound side, and struck a tree, VSP reported. The driver, Angela Dawn Lewis, a 50-year-old Callao resident, was not wearing her seatbelt and died at the scene from her injuries. This is a developing story. Subscribe for updates. Montross man in Gloucester turn-over crash had no license & list of charges

The Montross man charged for the overturned log truck crash that shut down Rt. 33 in Gloucester on Nov. 21 didn’t even have a driver’s license, according to Virginia State Police. At around 1:30 p.m. on that Thursday afternoon, 56-year-old Arthur W. Cardell was driving a 1998 International truck from Robinson's D & B Logging in the 12000 block of History Land Hwy in Warsaw, according to the report from VSP. Cardell was traveling southbound on Rt. 17 and when he turned onto Rt. 33 westbound, the truck turned over and logs spilled onto both sides of the highway. Richmond County dog shooting ends with no-jail plea

A Warsaw man has pled guilty to three charges in a Richmond County case where two dogs were killed. As previously reported, last March, Keno and Felon, reportedly disappeared from their owner’s residence in Haynesville and were found shot and stacked on top of each other by the road in neighboring Westmoreland County. Earvin David Gray was arrested and charged with two misdemeanors, animal cruelty and obstruction of justice. He also faced felony destruction of property. Court records show Gray stuck a plea whereby his felony was reduced to misdemeanor destruction of property. In return, he pled guilty to all three charges with the agreement that he would receive a 12-month sentence for each charge but all time would be suspended. Traffic delays coming for 2 Middle Peninsula – Northern Neck bridges

Upcoming work will cause delays for drivers using two bridges that connect the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula. Downing Bridge Starting tonight, Sept. 18, and continuing through the 20th, VDOT is advising drivers to expect overnight delays when crossing the Downing Bridge between Richmond County and Tappahannock. Due to a scheduled bridge inspection, Rt. 360 running over the bridge will be reduced to a single lane of alternating traffic regulated by an automated flagging device. Work will occur between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. If weather interferes with the planned schedule, additional dates will be announced, VDOT said. While 55-year-old David Lawrence Schneider was at the Richmond County courthouse this morning to be arraigned for child sex offenses, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office was announcing that an additional 19 charges were filed in the case. On August 6, Sheriff Stephan Smith announced Schneider was arrested at 8:02 that morning for taking indecent liberties with a child by a person in a custodial or supervisory role. Smith stated Schneider was being held at the Northern Neck Regional Jail in Warsaw. Schneider, a Farnham resident, was transported from the jail to court today where he was arraigned by Judge Julia Sichol. Former Lancaster deputy charged with new child sex crimes

A former Lancaster County deputy has been arrested for child offenses again. According to Hanover Sheriff’s Office, last month, 29-year-old Motley Allen Haynie was posing as a juvenile online and interacted with an investigator. Haynie was attempting to arrange a meeting to engage in sexual activity. Hanover Sheriff’s Office said the individual was identified as Haynie, then, on July 25, warrants were obtained for two counts of solicitation of a minor and one count each for solicitation of child pornography and taking indecent liberties with a minor. Report of gun shots leads to discovery of dead man in Colonial Beach

On Sunday, June 9, Colonial Beach Police Department announced there was a large police presence in the area of Kintz St. and Franklin Ave. due to police working a crime scene. That crime scene, it turns out, was a fatality. In an update on Tuesday, CBPD stated a call for shots fired came in around 12:13 p.m. When officers arrived, they found a Colonial Beach man, 30-year-old Jereamy Pierce lying in the roadway. According to CBPD, EMS personnel declared Pierce dead after they arrived at the scene. CBPD said this appears to be an isolated incident, and added that there’s no known threat to the public. ‘Right to Fish’ law makes it a crime to interfere with work of watermen in VA

Starting in July, in Virginia, it will be a crime to interfere with the work of commercial watermen or their equipment, including their boats. That new law comes from Delegate Hillary Kent’s “Right to Fish” bill, HB 1256, which Governor Youngkin signed on April 4th. It will be a Class 1 misdemeanor for any person who knowingly and intentionally interferes with or impedes the operation or commercial fishing activity. Convictions carries a potential sentence of up to 12 months in jail and a fine up to $2,500. For the first offense, a person found guilty loses the ability to have hunting and fishing licenses for 1 year. Additional convictions bar individuals from having those licenses for 3 years. Westmoreland woman goes missing, Tappahannock man arrested for murder

A 20-year-old Tappahannock man who was wanted for 1st degree murder was arrested at a convenience store in Tappahannock. Kearrah T. Chappell, a 21-year-old Westmoreland woman was reported missing on April 1st. The last sighting of her was around 9 p.m. that day at her home, according to information from Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. Wednesday night, around 11:15 p.m., a body matching her description was found in the 300 block of Welford’s Wharf Rd. in Richmond County, which neighbors Westmoreland, announced Richmond County Sheriff Stephan Smith.
