Expect overnight delays for Norris Bridge July 14-19

Lane closures & delays coming to Norris Bridge

Prepare for nighttime traffic delays when crossing the Robert O. Norris Jr. Bridge, also known as the White Stone Bridge, as VDOT will begin a rehabilitation project on March 31. VDOT said the work on the bridge, which carries Rt. 3 between Lancaster and Middlesex, will involve closures and drivers should expect delays. During the project, workers will be strengthening and replacing structural steel elements on the bridge. The first two weeks will be used to take measurements and assess the materials needed for the forthcoming repairs. Poquoson woman charged for drug smuggling attempt at Haynesville Correctional Center

Today, Virginia Department of Corrections announced a Poquoson woman is facing a felony drug distribution charge after a foiled smuggling attempt at Haynesville Correctional Center last fall. On November 22, Kristyn Nicole Mazzariello came to the Haynesville facility to visit a family member for an inmate graduation, reported VADOC. She was stopped, asked to submit to a drug and contraband scan by a VADOC K-9, and the K-9 altered authorities to Mazzariello’s body and inside her vehicle, the department stated. Mazzariello admitted to having drugs and turned over three packages that were previously concealed on her body, which had 90 Buprenorphine and Naloxone strips and 7 synthetic marijuana papers, VADOC reported. Crash in Weems leaves 1 dead, 1 in critical condition

A single-vehicle crash on Greentown Road in Weems claimed the life of a 63-year-old man and has left a Kilmarnock woman in critical condition, Virginia State Police reported. The crash occurred around 8:40 p.m. last night, January 30. Irvin Maurice Yerby, of Weems, was driving a 1997 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck. He was on Greentown Road, about three-tenths of a mile south of Gaskins Road, when he ran off the left side, VSP reported. The pickup flipped multiple times and he and his passenger, 56-year-old Martha Lynn Veney, were thrown out. The body of Gabriella Watkins, a 19-year-old who went missing in early December, has been located, Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Office confirmed. As previously reported, Watkins had been missing since December 6. She was found Tuesday, January 28, amid an “extensive search” of an Essex County property that involved six local and state agencies, WCSO reported. A search warrant had been obtained for a large tract of land adjacent to Church Hill Road and Desha Road, WCSO revealed.
