VSP seeking suspect in Powhatan hit & run

Virginia State Police is calling on the public for help with an alleged hit-and-run case in Powhatan. Cape Charles woman killed in Northampton crash

An 85-year-old Cape Charles woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash on the Eastern Shore this morning. According to Virginia State Police, Nadine Marie Good was driving a 2017 Ford Fiesta headed north on Rt. 13, aka Lankford Highway, in Northampton County. She was north of Cobb Station Road in Cheriton when she reportedly lost control of the vehicle and ran off the road around 9 a.m. Good hit a culvert and tree before the vehicle flipped. She was thrown from the vehicle’s passenger side and died at the scene. VSP said there is not indication that alcohol or speed were contributing factors. Essex man killed in early morning crash

This morning, the southbound lanes of Rt. 17, aka Tidewater Trail, in the Caret area of Essex were shut down for hours due to a fatal crash that’s now under investigation by Virginia State Police. At 4:40 a.m., VSP was dispatched to the scene at Supply Road and Tidewater Trail where there was a two-vehicle crash involving a 2018 Chevrolet pickup and a tractor-trailer. According to VSP, the pickup driver, 61-year-old Danny William Holmes, failed to stop at the stop sign and hit the tractor-tractor trailer, which was heading south on Tidewater Trail. Holmes, an Essex resident, died at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer, who wasn’t named, was injured, but VSP said the injuries were non-life-threatening. Fredericksburg: 24-hour lane closures in Southpoint Pkwy area through Sept.

Lanes closures have been imposed at the intersection of Rt. 1 in Fredericksburg, and they will remain in effect 24 hours a day through mid-September. VDOT is advising drivers to use alternate routes if possible. Accomack hit with 2nd fatal pedestrian crash in a week

Virginia State Police is investigating the second fatal pedestrian crash in less than a week. Last night, just before 10 p.m., VSP said troopers were called out to investigate a crash on Rt. 13, south of the Rt. 175 intersection in the Oak Hall Area of Accomack. From preliminary investigations, VSP said it appears a 2004 Toyota Prius was traveling northbound on Route 13 through a controlled intersection and hit 53 year-old Thomas Leandreas Wharton, of Mappsville, who was walking in the left travel lane. Wharton died upon impact, VSP reported. The driver, 36-year-old Judea Amenda Van Smith of Cambridge, MD suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and VSP said she was transported Salisbury Regional Hospital. Drivers who use the Falmouth Bridge to travel between Fredericksburg and Stafford in the evenings, be advised. Delays and closures are scheduled for the days ahead. Starting today, Monday, Aug.19 and running through Thursday, Aug. 29, from 7 p.m. – 7 a.m., there will be single-lane closures. Those closures will be imposed in alternating directions. Also, overnight between 9 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. on Aug. 22-23 and Aug. 27-28, there will be intermittent full traffic stops for up to 15 minutes each. According to VDOT, these measures are needed to conduct live load tests on the bridge. Sensors will be placed on the bridge to measure the bridge’s response to vehicles of various weights. Crash on Hampton side of HRBT claims Norfolk woman

A Norfolk woman was killed by a crash at the Hampton side of the Hampton Road Bridge Tunnel yesterday. Virginia State Police said preliminary investigations show 49-year-old Tonya Denise Hinkle was driving a 2024 Jetta and was in the left lane at the mouth of the tunnel when she rear-ended a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe. According to VSP, due to the impact, Hinklethen ran off the road, hit into a jersey wall, and was pushed back into traffic where she crashed into 2012 F-150. Hinkle survived a trip to Norfolk General Hospital, but VSP said she later died from the injuries. The other two drivers only suffered minor injuries. A concerned friend discovered that 30-year-old Austin Trevor Hale of Virginia Beach had been in a fatal accident in Norfolk on July 31, but according to Virginia State Police, it’s unknown when that crash occurred. According to VSP, on Wednesday, the unnamed friend called the Emergency Communications Center and explained that he had not heard from Hale all day. The man got concerned, obtained Hale’s last known location, and routed the location back to Hale’s home. Another crash on Rt. 17 bridge in Middlesex, VDOT confirms bridge replacement

The northbound bridge over Dragon Run on Rt. 17 at the Middlesex-Gloucester line requires repair once again after another crash, this time on July 26. According to VSP Sergeant Michelle Anaya, around 2 a.m., John Fletcher of Shacklefords was driving a 2022 Ford F450 when he attempted to avoid a deer causing him to run off the road and hit the bridge and a guardrail. Fletcher was charged with failure to maintain the lane, Anaya said. Around 20 feet of bridge rail was damaged in the crash along with about 208 feet of guardrail north and south of the bridge, VDOT reported. VDOT backtracks on decision to cut Jamestown-Scotland ferry service

VDOT backtracked on its plan to cut service for the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry starting July 8. As previously reported, VDOT planned to reduce service for the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry, which runs 24/7 every day of the year, citing staffing problems. Today, VDOT said the reduced schedule would no longer be implemented. “As staffing and vessel resources allow, the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry will remain operating under the summer schedule that went into effect May 27 to accommodate the increase in ferry passengers during the summer travel season,” the department stated. With the summer schedule, a boat crosses the James River about every 20 – 30 minutes, depending on the time of day.
