US Marshals offering reward for escaped inmate from North Carolina

With the manhunt approaching two weeks, the U.S. Marshals Service announced a reward up to $7,000 for escapee John Matthew Nigh.

Nigh, a 37-year-old white male, is wanted for escaping from the Craven County Detention Facility in North Carolina. USMS labeled him armed and dangerous and said he has an extensive criminal history including attempted murder of law enforcement, drugs, and weapons charges.

According to Craven County Sheriff’s Office, detention officers discovered Nigh was missing from his cell at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26.

The search revealed that two inmates helped Nigh remove ceiling grating, and he entered a utility ceiling chase and exited the roof through a ventilation housing, the sheriff’s office said. Meanwhile, the two cellmates concealed his escape by stuffing a mattress, making it appear that he was sleeping in his cell, the office added.

Craven County Sheriff’s Office also noted that Nigh is known from past encounters to be armed and he should be considered dangerous.

He is 6’2”, 190 lbs, and has a “JMN” tattoo on his upper left arm and a cross on his upper right arm. He also has “LIFE” tattooed on his left leg and “TRIBAL” on the right leg, USMS noted.
