The federal government has entered another shutdown. While political leaders focus on the “who” and the “why,” thousands of Virginians are left to manage the real-life consequences. If you’re among those affected, it’s important to know that some protections and assistance are available.

Housing protection
Virginia law provides safeguards to help residents maintain housing during a federal government shutdown.
If you’re facing eviction for unpaid rent accrued after the shutdown began, you can request a 60-day delay in court proceedings under a provision passed in 2020.
Homeowners facing foreclosure may also be eligible for a 60-day stay. To qualify, you must request the delay within 90 days of the shutdown (or its end) and provide proof that you’re a furloughed federal employee, contractor, or work for a company under federal contract and have lost income due to the shutdown.

Landlords who rent out one- to four-family homes may qualify for a 60-day delay in foreclosure proceedings if their tenants have lost income due to the shutdown. The landlord must request the stay within 90 days and provide documentation showing the tenant is a furloughed federal worker or contractor.
Unemployment benefits
Virginia offers unemployment benefits to those furloughed during the shutdown. However, essential employees who must report to work without pay are not eligible. Those who do receive benefits will be required to repay the Virginia Employment Commission after the opens. Meanwhile, you have to actively seek other work.
Local help
Check with your local government for additional support. For example, the City of Alexandria is offering enforcement relief for costs such as taxes and parking tickets. While interest and penalties still apply, the goal is to prevent residents from having to immediately part with those funds. This relief is available to federal contractors, employees, and business owners linked to the federal government.
