Youngkin unveils sites promoting VA’s 250,000 open jobs & aiding former federal employees

Gov. Glenn Youngkin unveiled new state resources Monday aiming to connect job seekers with job opportunities and provide the pathway forward for federal workers facing job loss.

Speaking at an event held at the Capitol One headquarters in McLean, the governor “the evolution of opportunity in the Commonwealth. It has been unlocked and there is an open door to walk through to take advantage of it. And anyone can find that open door through VirginiaHasJobs.com.”

The website VirginiaHasJobs.com is a new state resource showcasing and connecting jobseekers to the more than 250,000 open positions that the governor reports there to be in Commonwealth.

“From Day One, I declared that Virginia was open for business, and we’ve worked tirelessly to deliver on that promise,” said Youngkin.“Today, Virginia stands as the top state for business, with tremendous job opportunities across the Commonwealth. “Virginia Has Jobs” is an opportunity for every Virginian — and every business — to capitalize on the thriving economy, with more than 250,000 open jobs waiting to be filled.”

According to Youngkin, about 100,000 of those open jobs are in Northern Virginia. The remainder are literally “everywhere” stretched across every area of the state, he told the crowd.

Virginia is offering the pathway to a career of one’s dreams for all Virginians and anyone who wants to move here, Youngkin said.

The focus on Virginia’s open job opportunities comes as the federal government and DOGE are implementing job cuts, which have the governor acknowledged has the potential to impact a lot of Virginians given the state’s large federal workforce. Virginia had over 144,000 federal employees, as of December, according to the Congressional Research Service.

The governor acknowledged the federal government’s need for efficiency but expressed empathy for impacted workers.

“Listen, we have a federal government that is inefficient and we have an administration that is taking on that challenge of rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse and driving efficiency in our federal government. It needs to happen,” Youngkin said.

But to federal workers, he added, “We care about you. We want to support you.”

With that, Youngkin announced the state has also launched a “resource bundle” to assist impacted federal workers. That site compiles resources in one place that those individuals may find useful, from guidance on resume writing and reskilling to getting health insurance and unemployment benefits.

Youngkin emphasized Virginia’s strong economy. In addition to the 250,000 jobs currently available, Youngkin said there are nearly $100 billion in company commitments that will support another 65,000 jobs. He touted the “Virginia Has Jobs” initiative as a pathway to “a career of your dreams” for Virginians and anyone seeking to relocate. “We have that next opportunity for them” he said.

Secretary of Commerce and Trade Caren Merrick hit similar high notes. “We want job seekers across the nation to know what companies like LEGO, Micron, Amazon, Capital One, Liebherr Mining Equipment, and Electro-Mechanical know, opportunity abounds in Virginia.

“We have reduced the cost of living, invested in business ready sites and infrastructure, and fostered the growth of more than 10,000 startups. Virginia is soaring. Your next great job is here in Virginia,” she said.
