18-year-old leads police chase, hits 3 vehicles in Fairfax

Virginia State Police announced an investigation into an 18-year-old who was reportedly involved in a police pursuit and a three-vehicle crash in Fairfax.

The incident started around 11:19 p.m on Thursday, March 14, when, according to VSP, they attempted to stop a speeding grey Honda Odyssey heading westbound on I-495.

When police initially attempted the stop, the Odyssey was approaching I-95 South. The minivan reportedly refused to stop, and the pursuit initiated.

According to VSP, amid the chase, the Odyssey struck an unspecified vehicle near the exit for Route 1 but didn’t stop.

With the pursuit still underway, the Odyssey crashed into a Toyota 4-Runner and then into a tractor-trailer near the exit for Route 123.

The minivan “came to a rest on its side,” VSP reported.

The driver of the Odyssey, Everett T. Smith of Springfield, only suffered minor injuries, VSP reported. The driver of the 4-Runner was taken to the hospital with injuries deemed non-life-threatening.

The other two drivers weren’t injured.

Smith is facing charges of reckless driving: speeding, eluding law enforcement, hit and run, reckless driving, and operating an unregistered vehicle.
