Truck driver killed in hit-and-run on I-81 in Shenandoah, VSP wants info

Virginia State Police is seeking information related to a hit-and-run that killed a truck driver in Shenandoah County. According to VSP, James W. Carr, Jr. a 64-year-old Alton, NH man was hit by an unknown vehicle on Saturday, March 23, on I-81 at the 296-mile marker. Police say the crash occurred between 5:00 – 8:12 a.m. Carr was a pedestrian and was in the roadway when he was hit by a northbound vehicle that didn’t stop. VSP has not provided any explanation for why Carr in the road. From the investigation, VSP determined that Carr had been driving a red 2022 Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer with Crete Carrier Corp. on the sides. Hampton Roads Regional Jail closes down

Virginia has one less jail. As of yesterday, Hampton Roads Regional Jail is officially closed. The facility at 2690 Elmhurst Lane in Portsmouth opened in 1998, and before closing, it was used to house inmates from Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, and Portsmouth. HHRJ's cells have been empty since March 20. Inmates were moved to their home jurisdictions. The HHRJ Board voted to pay off a $14 million bond, and the April 1 closure, which was announced in November, marked the final day for the jail, Kelly Curry, executive assistant at HHRJ told Wavy 10 Norfolk. The Virginia State Police Sex Offender and Firearms Investigative Unit is calling on the public to provide information that could help authorities find Sheldon Locke Davis. Davis is a Tier 3 sex offense who status is currently listed as “absconder” and VSP said he is wanted on 4 counts of failing to re-register as a sex offender. Davis last reported address is 8100 Wilderness Woods Lane in Rhoadesville, which is located in Orange County. According to VSP, he has moved but it’s believed that he may still be living somewhere in Orange or a surrounding county. The date of his last registration renewal is listed as November 9, 2023. Henrico Police announce plan to reduce response to calls

Henrico County Police has generated quite a buzz with its announcement about a “Calls for Service Reduction Plan” that went into effect Monday, March 18. Under the plan, Henrico officers will change how they responds to certain types of calls and will stop responding to some calls altogether. According to Henrico Police Chief Eric English, in the past, the department’s officers have been put in positions to respond to calls where they have no legal authority. Leesburg PD seeking info on bank robbery suspect

Leesburg Police are asking for the public’s help to identify the suspect in a bank robbery. The suspect is reportedly a black male believed to be between the ages of 25 and 35. He’s about 5’8 and described as a having a medium build. According to LPD, the robbery occurred at the Truist bank located at 1007 Edwards Free Rd. NE on October 2 at 3:32 p.m. LPD said the suspect was wearing a black Nike shirt, black pants with a white pattern and black shoes. He also had on a cross necklace and baseball cap. Port Royal man wanted for workplace stabbing in Stafford found & charged

The 22-year-old Port Royal man wanted for stabbing his co-worker in Stafford was found and arrested this week. Stafford County Sheriff’s Office had been looking for Leonard Pratt, Jr. since March 8. On that Friday, at around 1:40 p.m., Deputy C.S. Harding responded to an assault call at Genesis Logistics on Bradburn Place. The caller reported that two employees got into a fight in the warehouse. One of those individuals got stabbed and was taken to the hospital. Pratt, who is accused of stabbing him, left the scene before police arrived. Leesburg Police have launched an investigation and are urging the public to reach out with any information regarding a deceased “late-term fetus” found in a pond. According to LPD, the body was discovered in the pond behind Park Gate Drive SE by a community member around 4:30 p.m. on March 11. That pond is nestled in a residential community and circled by a trail. Houses run the length along both sides of the pond, and Stryker, a medical technologies and healthcare company, sits at one corner. Sumerduck woman facing involuntary manslaughter for death of Charlottesville woman

Shannon Piper Day, a 37-year-old Sumerduck woman, is being held in Fauquier Adult Detention Center after being charged for a fatal crash last weekend. It was Saturday, March 2, at around 10:26 p.m. and Day was driving a 2018 Ford Explorer heading west on Shipps Tore Rd. (Rt. 637), VSP reported. She was about ½ mile west of Marsh Rd. when she failed to make it around a curve. VSP said Day ran off the right side of the road and crashed into a tree. Her passenger, Claire E. The man killed last week in a Virginia Beach crash during a police chase was from New York. He was driving a stolen vehicle and was listed as a suspect in a violent crime that occurred the day he died, VSP announced. The police chase began last Friday, February 23, just shy of 8:30 p.m. State Police attempted to stop a 2024 black Chevrolet pickup truck for reckless driving because the vehicle was reportedly going 92 mph in a 55 mph zone. The truck was heading south on Rt. 13 in Exmore, a town on the Eastern Shore, and refused to stop, VSP stated. James Stevens, a former Primis employee, is facing a sentence of up to 30 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to bank fraud. The 46-year-old man from Weems worked for the bank from 2002 to 2023, although, over that period, the bank was sold several times and operated under different names. According Stevens' own admission in federal court documents, from about 2008 up until his departure from Primis in 2023, he was exploiting his position to get money for himself, for others, and to pay fraudulent loans he was making at the bank. Stevens last position at the bank was as commericial lender. His “primary method” of fraud was issuing loans in other people’s names, the court documents state.
