Traffic pattern changes on Rt. 17 in Spotsylvania starting today

Drivers in Spotsylvania who use Rt. 17 should be aware that a temporary traffic shift near I-95 went into effect today, March 1. Southbound traffic on Rt. 17 will be shifted slightly to the right to cross the new overpass of I-95. The shift is to allow construction crews the space to finish building the median of the new four-lane interstate overpass. And the new pattern will remain in place until construction is complete on the road widening and bridge replacement project. Northbound Route 17 traffic will continue to cross the original I-95 overpass. Driver killed in 4-vehicle Accomack crash identified as Hampton man

The Chief Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed the identity of a driver killed in a four-vehicle crash in Accomack last Friday, VSP announced. The deceased, whose identity was previously unknown, is 39-year-old Romar Lamont Reid of Hampton. According to VSP, the crash occurred on Lankford Highway (Route 13), a 1/2 mile south of Coal Kin Road in the town of Painter. Reid was driving a 2012 Ford sedan heading north. He was “traveling at a high rate of speed” and rear-ended a 2016 Chevrolet Cruz, VSP noted. The impact from that crash sent Reid’s vehicle into oncoming traffic, and a 2021 Freightliner tractor trailer traveling southbound hit his Ford head-on. VSP wants witnesses for Chesapeake crash that killed 19-year-old

Virginia State Police is seeking witnesses for a fatal crash in Chesapeake on the evening of February 19. Details are limited as the investigation remains underway “due to the complexity of crash.” However, thus far, VSP said it appears that a 2000 grey Toyota Solara and a 2008 red Pontiac Vibe, were traveling southbound on I-664 when they made contact. Both drivers lost control and both hit the guardrail. The Pontiac, was driven by 18-year-old Elvis Cruz. The vehicle flipped over, but Cruz survived and was transported to Norfolk Sentara Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to VSP. 3-vehicle crash in Middlesex injures 7 people

Seven people were injured in a three-vehicle crash on Rt. 33 in Middlesex on Monday, VSP reported. The accident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. just east of Mill Creek Rd. and blocked the eastbound and westbound sides of Rt 33. VSP said its preliminary investigation revealed 30-year-old Taylor Mae Moore of Hardyville was driving a 2007 Honda Civic and rear-ended a 2014 Subaru Outback as it stopped in the eastbound lane of Route 33 for additional traffic ahead. The Subaru, driven by 43-year-old Ann Regan Wynne of Deltaville, then struck a 2007 Toyota Tundra that was heading west. Stringfellow Rd. in Fairfax closing this weekend

Stringfellow Road in Fairfax will be closing this weekend to allow for the installation of a water main. The northbound and southbound lanes of Rt. 645, Stringfellow Rd., between Route 29 and Centreville Farms Road are scheduled to close at 7 a.m Saturday, Feb. 17, until 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, VDOT announced. Local traffic can still use Stringfellow Road between Centreville Farms Road and Autumn Willow Drive. But, Stringfellow Road will be closed to all traffic in both directions between Autumn Willow Drive and Route 29. Through traffic will be detoured via Route 29 and Centreville Farms Road back to Stringfellow Road. Virginia State Police were calling on the public to help identify a white male killed along Rt. 11 in Augusta. That man has now been identified as Tony L. Epperson, age 37, of West Augusta. According to VSP, at midnight, on February 9, Trooper A.J Garasimowicz was dispatched to the scene of a fatal pedestrian crash along Route 11 north at the Interstate 81 northbound entrance ramp in Greenville. A vehicle was attempting to merge onto the I-81 ramp and hit the man who was “walking in the roadway.” Epperson was wearing all-black, non-reflective clothing that included a hoodie, cargo-style pants, and black sneakers. Drivers be advised, this weekend Virginia State Police are launching a traffic enforcement operation on Interstate 66 targeting those they consider to be risky drivers. VSP has issued advanced warning that people should line up their designated drivers for the Super Bowl. Over the next few days, troopers will not only be out on I-66, they'll be out in numbers. “The weekend of the Super Bowl is an excellent time to tackle bad driving behaviors,” said Lt. Col. Traffic delays around midday on Rt. 288 South in Chesterfield were caused by a crash near Watkins Center Parkway that sparked a fire and shut down all of the travel lanes. Around 11:30 a.m. a tractor-trailer and an SUV collided and a power line was hit, according to Virginia State Police. The toppled pole left power lines in the highway. Chesterfield Fire and EMS reported that one car got tangled in the power lines and an individual inside required assistance getting out. No one was injured, and there were no reports of any vehicles catching on fire. Eastern Shore drivers should be aware that, as of Monday, January 29, the portion of Rt. 602 between Belle Haven Road and east of Darby’s Wharf Lane is closed to through traffic. There is a detour in place that will direct motorists traveling from Accomack County to follow Route 178 (Belle Haven Road) to Route 13 (Lankford Highway) to Route 183 (Occohannock Neck Road) to Route 602 (Cemetery Road). Lane closure scheduled on Coleman Bridge Sunday

This weekend, VDOT contractors are scheduled to work on the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge, which carries Rt. 17 between Gloucester and York counties. Drivers may want to factor in additional travel time on Sunday, Jan. 28. There will be a single-lane closure scheduled on from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., weather permitting. Marine traffic that requires bridge openings will also be impacted. Between 8 a.m. and as late as 8 p.m., all bridge openings will be restricted. Work and successful testing will need to be completed before the reopenings resume, noted VDOT. Vessels that don’t require a bridge open can continue using the channel as usual.
