Restrictions linked to Sterling home explosion may cause propane delays in Loudoun, fire dept. warns

Amid the investigation of the Sterling home explosion that occurred in February, Loudoun County Fire & Rescue has warned local residents may face delays in their propane deliveries.

The explosion on Silver Ridge Dr. resulted from a leak involving a 500-gallon underground propane tank, LCFR announced this week. The investigation, which is still underway, revealed that propane leaked into and around the structure and was ignited by “a still unknown ignition source.”

The Fire Mashal has placed restrictions on Southern States Cooperative. – Leesburg – Fairfax Petroleum Service requiring to update fire code related information. And until those fire code updates are made, “residents of Loudoun County and its incorporated towns may experience interruptions to their normal propane service delivery,” said LCFR.

The department said it’s working with the company to get the updates completed as quickly as possible to help reduce the impact on the community.

Watchful Eye reached out to Southern States to request details about the required updates, how long they would take to complete, and the extent of service delays thus far.

“Southern States Cooperative cannot comment on the details of an on-going investigation. We are cooperating with authorities on both the investigation and all requirements. No further details are available to share at this time,” said a response provided by communications director Jennifer Gwyn.
