Virginia Department of Corrections announced an operational plan is being developed specifically for Greensville Correctional Center after an array of contraband was discovered including drugs and weapons.
From October 30 to November 14, Greensville staffers and members from a statewide Special Response Team conducted “intensive searches” in a “comprehensive shakedown of inmate housing,” VADOC announced.
A large number of substances and drugs were seized during the effort, including:
- Heroin
- Cocaine
- Buprenorphine strips
- THC and THC Wax
- Possible crack cocaine
- Possible spice
- Steroid tablets
- A white, powdery substance
- A white, crystalline substance
- A brown, powdery substance
- A brown, liquid substance
- A grey, powdery substance
- A black, tar-like substance
- Many unknown substances
And according to VADOC that wasn’t all the contraband discovered. There were 21 homemade weapons, 10 cell phones, and several pieces of “contraband homemade clothing.”
“This drug and contraband shakedown will improve safety within the facility,” said VADOC Director Chadwick Dotson. But the department is looking to make long-term improvements. Hence, the effort to create an operational plan developed specifically for Greensville.
As of August over 2,400 inmates were housed in the prison making it the largest population in VADOC’s major institutions, the department announced. And, as previously reported, there have been numerous inmate deaths this year.
In addition to the forthcoming operational plan aimed at “addressing the flow of drugs and contraband,” VADOC also announced the prison’s leadership team was disbanded and reassigned.
There’s new leadership in town, including Kevin McCoy, formerly warden at Sussex I State Prison who will now serve as lead warden of Greensville. David Newcomer, formerly warden at Augusta Correctional Center, will serve as Greensville’s warden, and Frank Roach, formerly the assistant warden at Dillwyn Correctional Center transferred into the same position at Greensville.
“The Virginia Department of Corrections is taking several steps to ensure institutional safety and security at Greensville Correctional Center,” said Dodson.
