Another warning of potential measles exposure in Northern Virginia after 2nd case

For the second time in less than a month, the public is being warned about potential measles exposure in northern Virginia. Maryland health authorities announced there is a positive case of measles in Montgomery County. The infected person is a someone who recently traveled internationally. The groups at risk of potential exposure related to that individual include anyone who was at Washington Dulles International Airport in the International Terminal on January 27 between 6 – 9:30 a.m., health authorities say. As a result, Alexandria Health Department has also issued an advisory about this measles case and the potential of exposure in northern Virginia. Manassas man ejected, killed in I-81 crash in Shenandoah

A two-vehicle accident on I-81 in Shenandoah County proved fatal for an ejected passenger. The incident occurred Monday, January 29, at 6 p.m. at the 289 mile marker, Virginia State Police reported. A 2015 Ford F350 experienced a driver’s side blowout, which caused the truck to run off the right side of the road, flip, and hit the guardrail. Wilson R. Acosta Zelaya, a 21-year-old of Springfield, was in the backseat and was not wearing a seatbelt, VSP stated. He was thrown from the vehicle into roadway and was hit by a Kenworth tractor-trailer. Man & Woman charged for business burglaries in Loudoun

Two Purcellville residents are accused of burglarizing businesses in Loudoun County. According to Leesburg PD, on Thursday, January 18, its officers were dispatched to a business on North King Street for a report of a burglary. A representative of the affected business reported that shortly before 3:00 a.m., a male and a female entered the closed business and stole property. LPD said through an investigation, they determined the two suspects involved were 46-year-old Samuel Jenkins III and Abigail Laura, age 38. Emergency landing on Friday is second in Loudoun in a week

Friday, January 26, marked the second emergency landing in Loudoun County within in a week. The latest incident occurred shortly after 5 p.m. at Leesburg Executive Airport. A Pilatus PC12 was coming in to the airport when the landing gear failed to fully extend, according to Leesburg Police Department. The pilot was able to safely land the plane in the grass just off the tarmac. Leesburg PD said six passengers were onboard, and no injuries were reported. A joint investigation between Alexandria Police and Child Protective Services is underway after a little girl was reportedly “abandoned” on South Van Dorn Street Wednesday night. It was approximately 9:45 p.m. when police responded to witness reports that a man left a child in front of 8 South Van Dorn Street, says APD. Officers found a little girl that they estimated was between 1 to 2 years old. She was “dressed in warm clothing and in apparent good health,” but no one in the area claimed to know the child or who she belonged to, the department statement. HB 721 “aims to protect Virginians against rent gouging practices,” said Delegate Nadarius Clark, who introduced the bill. If passed, HB 721 will give localities the ability to adopt anti-rent gouging provisions and an anti-rent gouging board. Notice would have to be provided and a public hearing held before a locality adopted its measures. The bill also requires landlords to provide at least two months written notice of a rent increase. Additionally, a rent increase couldn’t exceed the locality calculated allowance. And the allowance would be set at equal to the annual increase in the Consumer Price Index or 7%, whichever is less. Threats lead to evacuation of Alexandria, VA elementary school

Wednesday, an Alexandria, VA elementary school was evacuated amid a series of “false threats” that are now being investigated as swatting incidents, according to the police department. After receiving a call “of someone going to the school with guns” APD said it responded to Charles Barrett Elementary at 12:04 p.m. with officers, K9s, and SWAT and began searching the school. In a letter to families, the Charles Barrett principal, Loren Brody, said the school first went into “secure the building” status. Plane makes emergency landing on highway in Northern VA

An investigation is underway after a single-engine Cessna  208 Caravan plane made an emergency landing on Loudoun County Parkway in Sterling near Arcola Mills Drive. Virginia State Police reported that it was notified that the emergency landing was occurring at 12:51 p.m. FAA records show the aircraft, owned by Southern Airways Pacific based in Palm Beach, FL, took off only minutes before from Dulles International Airport and was headed to Lancaster, PA, ABC 7 News reported. Charges filed against teens in Stafford after ‘DUI crash’

Two teens were charged following a “juvenile DUI crash,” Stafford Sheriff’s Office announced. The incident occurred in January 14 at the intersection of Countryside Drive and Stony Hill Road. SCSO said a passerby reported an accident and deputy N.J. Amato responded shortly before 2 a.m. and found a Honda Civic that had crashed into a tree, but there were no occupants at the scene.
