Suspect in Custody after Portsmouth Man Fatally Shot at Home

A day after a 47‑year‑old man was found shot inside his Portsmouth home, police announced an arrest and multiple charges. On Saturday, April 18, Portsmouth police responded to a report of a shooting in the 200 block of Mayflower Road. Officers found Christopher Blair suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died. According to the preliminary investigation, 44‑year‑old Bentley Tramaine Cherry went to Blair’s home, where the two men got into an argument. The Alexandria Sheriff’s Office (ASO) has arrested one of its own on drug-related charges. Former deputy Amarachukwu Igwe was allegedly caught attempting to smuggle narcotics into the Alexandria Adult Detention Center on April 4. According to ASO, her intent was to provide the drugs to an inmate. Authorities took Igwe into custody before any narcotics were delivered to the intended recipient or entered the facility’s general population. Igwe was transported to the Arlington County Detention Facility for processing.
